Annual Report

This annual report represents the generosity of Coe’s closest friends. Your support makes a significant difference on the Coe campus every day, and on behalf of all who love our college, I am deeply grateful.

As you review the college’s progress, you will get a sense of the positive energy that is felt throughout the Coe community. In 2016-17 the Make Your Move campaign moved forward, including completion of a comprehensive renovation of Hickok Hall (with an addition featuring state-of-the-art classrooms) and the continued construction of Coe’s spectacular new Athletics and Recreation Complex. Other highlights of the past year included the first initiatives in the Bolder Coe strategic plan.

I’m pleased to report that it worked. Coe has now become the fastest-growing college or university in the state of Iowa.

The initiatives that were completed or begun in 2016-17—with your invaluable help—paved the way for Coe’s enrollment growth and continued progress. In the fall of 2017 we enrolled the largest and most diverse class in the college’s history by a significant margin, improved retention considerably, added keynote programs such as the Center for Creativity and Careers, and balanced the budget while reducing endowment spending. All of this took place while our comparison institutions faced declining enrollments and cuts in faculty, staff and programs.

Our overall goal is to grow enrollment to make Coe more financially stable and sustainable, while preserving academic quality and the close faculty-student interactions that have always defined our college. This has enabled us to continue to offer the full range of programs that define a liberal education, while at the same time improving the physical campus and adding selected high-demand programs, with an eye to preparing students for fulfilling careers and meaningful lives.

This progress would simply not be possible without your generosity, including your support of the Coe Fund. The steady, dependable support of annual donors is essential to our core mission: first-rate academic programs taught in a supportive residential environment, based on close personal relationships. This kind of teaching and learning is most effective in settings like Coe, and we never lose sight of the fact that we could not do it without your annual gifts.

It’s an exciting time to be at Coe, and I thank you once again for everything that you do for our college. A new generation of students is excelling because of you.
